Casa de las Ratas Week "We Lost Track"

up to March 3, 2005

Sorry Rat Fans it has been soooo long since I put up a Rat House Update. We were very lazy last year and just did not do much with the Rat House and got distracted and busy with some other projects... like rebuilding a VW Bug for instance... well anyway, we are back on the case here at 15561 Yorba Ave. "La Casa de las Ratas" and that's what the plaque on the front of house states.

They didn't have a plaque with RATS on it but since we call pigeons "Sky Rats" I figure that's close enough. (Even tho' they think they are doves. Whatever... They are Sky Rats if anyone asks.)

It has a timed illumination light bulb above it so that fire trucks can see the address at night as required by building code here.

Here's what the front of the house looks like these days with the great stained glass front window and the address plaque. The bars were powder coated and I just remembered we need to put the other grate up over the attic vent.

When you come to visit the Rat House, you have to invoke the services of the Gargoyle doorbells.

But that will be after you get by the guard bees...

And you work your way past Mike and Elvis's boat floating in a sea of weeds.

Poor Ricky worked all day on Saturday and barely got half the yard whacked down. You might have heard that the rest of the state of California is flooded and homes are sliding off of hills everywhere. That's because it is FLOOD season and not FIRE season, or EARTHQUAKE season....

Around the yard, we also feature grapefruits...

And lemons and avocados!

This bad-ass gargoyle light illuminates the side of the house in case you get lost amongst the weeds..

While I went with a more traditional lamp for the back of the house. There originally was a very similar lamp back here when I first got the house.

More critters: This is the new dining room overhead fixture. I also bought another one which I installed in my Esther St. house. I love the Bat Lamps!

Here is the finished medicine cabinet I built all by myself, in my garage, with my crappy wood working tools. My table saw sucks!

I am having Elvis build the other medicine cabinet for me, and also of course he is building the kitchen cabinets. He did a trial run for me building new cabinets for the kitchen in my Esther St. house. They are da bomb!

All the bedrooms at Casa de las Ratas have ceiling fans. They have wireless remote controls too. Clever.

So? What's under that kraft paper you ask?

WOOD FLOORS!

Pre-finished 3/4" solid Merbau from Brazil.

Amazing stuff, folks. And they will last a lifetime.

Gorgeous! Manny really got the hang of randomizing the courses.

3/4" gaps were left around the perimeters to allow for expansion. Manny Q enjoyed using my scroll saw for this.

The gaps will be covered by the baseboard and toekick molding, not to worry.

The new wood floors are all installed in each of the three bedrooms and the hall and all protected with kraft paper so nobody will scratch them...

Manny and Martin are just finishing up the living room now.

Here is Martin stapling a course of building felt to the 1 x 6 sub-floors. I read somewhere it was a good idea to have a player of building felt under the floors. Maybe it will help keep the stench of the crawlspace out of the house.

Too many dead rats in there from previous times...

Elvis scored us a super Porter-Cable flooring nailer cheap from a buddy of his who works there.

Manny just has to whack it with the mallet and the big nails drive themselves home.

(Watch yer toes!)

Nails go in every six inches or so and man, that floor is STRONG!

They just have a little bit left to go on the living room floor.

Manny and Martin made bets with each other as to how many packages of flooring will be left over... we will see who wins.

Manny loves the Rat House!

He is doing such a wonderful job. I am impressed with how well he has tackled new tasks that he has never done before with enthusiasm and how he never doubts that he learn quickly a new thing. Manny excels at everything he does.
